New and shiny pieces

This blog is still a blog, but it’s now a website too!  I will be doing a lot of tweaking in the next week to make it easier to read with biblical resources.  If you ever want to guest blog here, please let me know.  (dawnhuberty@yahoo.com)

I wanted to write about “all that glitters isn’t gold.”  I think it might be “IS” gold, but I digress!

Do you remember the feeling of getting something new?  A piece of jewelry, a new(er) car, your first apartment, or a collectible?  Isn’t it wonderful “at first”?? We look at it constantly, gaze, describe it’s qualities, feel blessed, happy, excited.  And after a few weeks or months, it’s just where we live, what we drive, or wear.  Sometimes it catches our eye or someone compliments us, but as the days go by, it just becomes a part of our daily life.

This happens with our faith too.  Some days we are more gung-ho than others.  A few years ago, I was determined to start my day with a morning devotional, along with a cup of coffee.  I would spend time in the Word and prayer.  Every.  Single.  Day.

And then, cancer happened.  The first five months I lived, breathed, slept, talked about cancer, fighting it, healing from it and then …… just when I wanted to get back to my life; turns out chemotherapy ruined my brain.  I couldn’t read or stay focused, I was unable to concentrate at all.  Coffee didn’t appeal to me either.   The special morning meditative time went away.

16 months later I have not been able to resume my meditation time, but I have found other ways.  I use a rosary for my prayers, each bead is a request or gratitude.  I do have a daily post in my email that inspires and encourages, it’s short and to the point.  I may not remember it later in the day, but it quenches my spirit for the time.

Faith is a constant.  We may have to find alternative ways to stay in grace, but it’s there, just for the asking.  I pray my book “The Pieces” lifts you up to understanding all that is good with God.

Icicles

Out my window I see a very large icicle, dripping.  It will likely be gone in a couple of hours, for today – the temp is heading to 40.  But it is winter here in the heartland and tonight it will get cold enough to freeze drips, turning them back into icicles.

Icicles remind me of faith.  Two steps forward (complete melting) and one step back (hello, icicles)!  We often find ourselves on a roll of faith, everything is fine, we are filled with faith, believing strongly in God and all He brings to our life ….. and then BAM, “something” happens and now we are standing on shaky ground.  Our faith?  Sure, yah, I’ve got faith.  Faith that nothing will ever change.

We are troubled human beings.  People have lacked faith since the days of Moses.

Mark 16:14
Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

We are always just a moment away from circumstances changing, so we must always stand firm on our faith.  We are not icicles, we will not melt and come back again the next day, we are human beings made in the image of Jesus, a strong, solid foundation.  May your faith be strengthened today and every day.

Pieces of Thanksgiving

While exploring the various celebrations of Thanksgiving in the U.S., I discovered I didn’t know actual facts.  If you are interested in the true meaning, read on:  Why we celebrate Thanksgiving

Tomorrow many people will sit down with family and friends and share in the gifts of food, laughter and conversation.  Some are serving our country, working in public service, or it’s just their regularly scheduled shift and will have a warmed up plate at home.

Whatever and wherever you find yourself, the gift (meaning) of thanksgiving is much more than pumpkin pie and turkey.  The word “thanksgiving” is used 29 times in the bible, and over 156 times in conjunction with other words: “thankful” “thankfulness,” etc.

Psalm 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Psalm 26:7 That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.
2 Corinthians 4:15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

May this prayer be yours:

Location pieces

You’ve heard it before: Location, location, location.  Where  your business is located, or your home, the school your children attend, walking distance from here to there — depends greatly on location.

I have finally after 52 years, GOT THE LESSON!!!  It does not matter where you worship; it merely matters THAT YOU DO!!!

Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised that a church I had attended previously; had me clapping and singing with a rousing rendition of “I’ve got peace like a river.”  During the service, various members shared memories of loved ones who had passed; in honor of “Day of the Dead.”

The part that I finally GOT was that it does not matter where you “go,”  — sure you might have your favorite church, people you know that pray regularly and have bible study groups, but if you happen to find yourself some place different — you can be guaranteed that God is there.  He was “so there” yesterday it kind of blew my mind.

It's not about the church meeting your needs; it's about joining the mission of God's people to meet the world's needs. - Brian D. McLaren

It really never is about where you go, or that you go, or that you should.  God is already in your heart, so wherever you are; He is also.

On the other side of the coin; belonging to – or attending church on a given day is an incredible blessing.

Romans 1:11-12 For I long to visit you so that I can impart to you the faith that will help your church grow strong in the Lord. Then, too, I need your help, for I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: Each of us will be a blessing to the other.
Ephesians 4:15-16 Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly—and s  o become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly, and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Pieces of Discernment

Oftentimes we are given a scripture or thought to spend time figuring out.  Maybe it was easily understandable — but other times, we can’t make heads or tails over the meaning, or if it’s even a message for US.

This is when spiritual discernment steps in.  Find a trusted advisor, someone who is spiritually sound, they do not have to be a minister, sometimes a good friend can help sort it out WITH you, not for you.

As a wise friend recently told me — it’s my seeking/understanding that matters most.  But sometimes we all need a little help!

Proverbs 2:3-5  Yes, if you want better insight and discernment, and are searching for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure, then wisdom will be given you and knowledge of God himself; you will soon learn the importance of reverence for the Lord and of trusting him.

Pieces of Purpose

One of my favorite Christian authors is Dr. Charles Stanley, in the March 2016 monthly devotional was this lovely paragraph on March 8th:

Whatever the circumstances, we should be evaluating what God is doing in us.  Like a gem polisher, He will work off our rough edges by running us up against tough experiences and people.  When we look for His purposes and lessons, we hasten the time when our life message reflects the hope that is available in Christ Jesus.

The lesson here is — we will experience hard times, we will deal with abrasive people, we will be wounded by words.  Circumstances will challenge and maybe even change us — but what we can’t do, is fall apart — taking a worldly view to our situation.  No!  Instead, lean in on your Heavenly Father; pray, seek wisdom and peace.

Overwhelming Pieces

Today, a prayer was answered that came from a very heavy heart.

I believe when we intensify our prayer time, come to Jesus with everything we have, and all that we do not, with a pure heart and true honesty, when we lay down the hurt, grievances, heartache – God desires to free us from it.  And by freeing, we are saved.  Again and again, we are saved by the love of Jesus.

“Don’t recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
There is never a place in our heart our life that our Father doesn’t know or can’t reach.  Oftentimes we have very little faith, we believe our situation is so dire that God can’t fix it, but most of the time – we don’t need fixing, we need only to fix our eyes and heart on God, let him do the work.  Let him in.  Let him love you.

Pieces of Contentment

Are we ever really content?  Do we go from one thing to the next?  Is our calendar perpetually filled? Do we believe that tomorrow will be better instead of focusing on what is good today?

Psalm 39:5-6  My life is no longer than my hand! My whole lifetime is but a moment to you. Proud man! Frail as breath! A shadow! And all his busy rushing ends in nothing. He heaps up riches for someone else to spend.
Psalm 17:15 But as for me, my contentment is not in wealth but in seeing you and knowing all is well between us. And when I awake in heaven, I will be fully satisfied, for I will see you face-to-face.

Pieces of Attitude

An attitude to chase after what is good and right, is an expectation that God has for us.  I offer all that I have, up to you, Father – please teach me.

All of us who are spiritually mature should have this same attitude. But if some of you have a different attitude, God will make this clear to you.
Tell them not to speak evil of anyone, but to be peaceful and friendly, and always to show a gentle attitude toward everyone.
[ Suffering for Doing Right ] To conclude: you must all have the same attitude and the same feelings; love one another, and be kind and humble with one another.

Pieces of Calm

We do not have to sit idly by waiting for the storm, it’s okay, really; perfectly okay to have periods of calm, without expectation of the hammer dropping or circumstances changing.

Psalm 107:29  He calms the storm and stills the waves.
Daniel 10:19  “God loves you very much,” he said; “don’t be afraid! Calm yourself; be strong—yes, strong!” Suddenly, as he spoke these words, I felt stronger and said to him, “Now you can go ahead and speak, sir, for you have strengthened me.”
