Pieces of Moments

The title seems a bit improper.  Can you have pieces of moments?  Where I was going with this thought is, there are ordinary and extraordinary moments in our lives.  Where do we find joy?  Where does heartache go to heal?  What of the prayer requests we send out? Are they tucked in-between the life we are aware of, or the places that are unfamiliar?

I’ve had conversations with two different, important women in my life.  One gave a response that involved seeking a solution and the other wanted to be a part of the solution.  But in the end, I found myself in prayer, searching for a nudge, an answer that would allow me to breathe and carry on.

And yet, here I am, still in the midst of distress.  I know Jesus wants more from me.  He wants me to pull out of myself out of the muck and mire.  He knows that I am in there, but He isn’t going to do the work, that is my job.  I have to figure out where to go on this path.  He guides and lights the way, but He cannot live my life.  I want it easy.  Simple.  Now.

God wants us to learn how to follow him and put down our demanding selves — to calm that screaming child in us. One way he helps us do this is to say, “Wait.” That miserable, uncomfortable, sometimes painful state of silence is one of God’s most powerful tools to set us free.

If we are willing, that is.  ~Jade Mazarin

The blessing comes out of patience, time, waiting on God.  His grace abounds, and that is what we will hold onto while He is working in us.

Pieces of Friendship

Jesus was friends with many people and in our quest to be more like Him, we share our life with friends also.

There are many variations of the bible; versions such as King James or the Living Bible, Good News, etc., but until today I had never heard of The Message.  I love how it breaks down these verses in Job 29:3-5

Job now resumed his response: “Oh, how I long for the good old days, when God took such very good care of me. He always held a lamp before me and I walked through the dark by its light. Oh, how I miss those golden years when God’s friendship graced my home, When the Mighty One was still by my side and my children were all around me, When everything was going my way, and nothing seemed too difficult.

What a beautiful definition of friendship with God.

Today I spoke with a friend who is a snowbird in Texas.  We try and talk  once a week now, but oftentimes it’s less often.  I miss seeing her whenever I want, but I know she is just a call away.

Maybe we feel that way sometimes with God.  We haven’t been studying His word, or spending time in prayer, worship or in solitude.  He too, is just a call away, He is always here, we just have to ask, cry out or pray.  Sometimes all three!

May you be blessed this week, finding time with a good friend and with the best friend; Jesus.

holidays

Pieces of Curiosity

It is unlikely that Jesus was born on December 25th, or that the first Pilgrim meal was the 4th Thursday of the 11th month.   But specific dates don’t matter if there are circumstances beyond your control.  Often times various family groups have celebrations a day or two before the big holiday, or maybe even a month later.  What is important is honoring the holiday and spending time with people you love.

Pieces of Thanksgiving

While exploring the various celebrations of Thanksgiving in the U.S., I discovered I didn’t know actual facts.  If you are interested in the true meaning, read on:  Why we celebrate Thanksgiving

Tomorrow many people will sit down with family and friends and share in the gifts of food, laughter and conversation.  Some are serving our country, working in public service, or it’s just their regularly scheduled shift and will have a warmed up plate at home.

Whatever and wherever you find yourself, the gift (meaning) of thanksgiving is much more than pumpkin pie and turkey.  The word “thanksgiving” is used 29 times in the bible, and over 156 times in conjunction with other words: “thankful” “thankfulness,” etc.

Psalm 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Psalm 26:7 That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.
2 Corinthians 4:15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

May this prayer be yours:

Location pieces

You’ve heard it before: Location, location, location.  Where  your business is located, or your home, the school your children attend, walking distance from here to there — depends greatly on location.

I have finally after 52 years, GOT THE LESSON!!!  It does not matter where you worship; it merely matters THAT YOU DO!!!

Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised that a church I had attended previously; had me clapping and singing with a rousing rendition of “I’ve got peace like a river.”  During the service, various members shared memories of loved ones who had passed; in honor of “Day of the Dead.”

The part that I finally GOT was that it does not matter where you “go,”  — sure you might have your favorite church, people you know that pray regularly and have bible study groups, but if you happen to find yourself some place different — you can be guaranteed that God is there.  He was “so there” yesterday it kind of blew my mind.

It's not about the church meeting your needs; it's about joining the mission of God's people to meet the world's needs. - Brian D. McLaren

It really never is about where you go, or that you go, or that you should.  God is already in your heart, so wherever you are; He is also.

On the other side of the coin; belonging to – or attending church on a given day is an incredible blessing.

Romans 1:11-12 For I long to visit you so that I can impart to you the faith that will help your church grow strong in the Lord. Then, too, I need your help, for I want not only to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours: Each of us will be a blessing to the other.
Ephesians 4:15-16 Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly—and s  o become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly, and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Pieces of Reconciliation

As a writer, I am enthralled by words; what they mean, the purpose they serve, how to use them correctly.  Oftentimes I come across a word that seems important; but I am not familiar with it.

Reconciliation is that word for me right now.   We die to our old selves, becoming new in Christ.

There is no greater joy than to be forgiven, to forgive and know that forgiveness is necessary each day — to live in harmony; oftentimes — with ourselves.

2 Corinthians 5:18 All these new things are from God who brought us back to himself through what Christ Jesus did. And God has given us the privilege of urging everyone to come into his favor and be reconciled to him.

Pieces of Forgiveness

I have struggled personally with the act of forgiveness.  Some resentment harbored over 30 years of my life.  Imagine.  Withholding forgiveness to another human being when Jesus forgives ME every day, sometimes many times a day.  I am not without sin.  How did it ever become my place to judge the actions of another?

It is not.

What does the bible say about forgiveness?

Wow, the bible says a lot, doesn’t it?  🙂

Pieces of Discernment

Oftentimes we are given a scripture or thought to spend time figuring out.  Maybe it was easily understandable — but other times, we can’t make heads or tails over the meaning, or if it’s even a message for US.

This is when spiritual discernment steps in.  Find a trusted advisor, someone who is spiritually sound, they do not have to be a minister, sometimes a good friend can help sort it out WITH you, not for you.

As a wise friend recently told me — it’s my seeking/understanding that matters most.  But sometimes we all need a little help!

Proverbs 2:3-5  Yes, if you want better insight and discernment, and are searching for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure, then wisdom will be given you and knowledge of God himself; you will soon learn the importance of reverence for the Lord and of trusting him.

Holy Week Pieces

This is the week of great miracle.  Jesus rode a donkey through Jerusalem to his final death.  Parts of the journey were lovely, palm branches waved in the air, coats laid on the ground, our version of a red carpet.  Hallelujahs shouted, prayers said, celebrations made.

The Last Supper

The people angered for justice to prevail.  Arguments had, angry voices demanding justice.

The cross.

The blood.

The finality.

Burdens carried to the cross.  Crown of thorns.  Blood.  Exhaustion.  Defeat.  Burial.  Mourning.  Great sadness.  Disbelief.  Sorrow.

HE LIVED.  HE DIED.  HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD.  HE LIVES.

The stone rolled away.  How?  Where is Jesus?  He has risen!!!  Our Lord reigns, loves, forgives, is exalted!!!
